Beginning Wednesday, March 30th, the intersection of 1st Ave N with 9th St N was closed for construction. The 1st Ave N and 7th St NW intersection was also closed.

This closure will last for approximately three months. A detour is in place routing traffic around the closure using Adventureland Dr., 5th Ave NW, and 2nd St NW.

Caring Hands Food Pantry is only accessible from the east, via 9th St NE.

Cody Named Director of Operations

Caring Hands Outreach Center is pleased to announce that Ms. Miriam Cody was named their first Director of Operations. “Once we determined the need for the position, Miriam became the obvious choice,” said Ned Looney, Executive Director of Caring Hands Outreach Center. Cody originally came to Caring Hands as an AmeriCorps Volunteer and quickly became an advocate for the people in need that Caring Hands serves.

Caring Hands Board President Mike Hartwig says, “Her unique perspective and collaborative style will help Caring Hands expand our current offerings and position us as a resource that can affect real change in eastern Polk County.”

Cody is uniquely qualified to run the day-to-day operations of Caring Hands because, at one time, she experienced food insecurity herself. A recent DMACC graduate, Cody will begin classes at Grand View University next spring pursuing a Master's Degree in Social Work. “There are so many ways that people experiencing food insecurity are inadvertently made to feel inferior. Caring Hands policies ensure that we are not one of those places. We do not look down upon anyone who comes here for assistance. God placed us here, in this place, at this time, to help our neighbors. And we plan to grow the ways we can provide assistance. I am excited about this opportunity!”

Thanks to our friends at Altoona Walmart, Caring Hands received a $1,000 grant to help us mobilize compassion towards our neighbors in eastern Polk County.

We couldn't serve our neighbors without the faithful support of community partners like Walmart.

If you have ever considered volunteering at Caring Hands Outreach Center, we would love to have you attend a volunteer training event. You'll learn about the different types of volunteer opportunities that we have, guidelines that we have to follow, and meet some of our other volunteers.

The next volunteer training session is:

August 17, 2022 from 9:00 - 11:00 am

602 3rd Street SW, Altoona

Advance registration is preferred, but not necessary. To register, please contact Barb Hoehne at or (515) 967-4533.
