Infusing a Spirit of Generosity into the Holidays

Here in the United States, the holidays are centered around faith, family, and food. As you spend time focusing on each of these things, be purposeful in making opportunities to be generous. In the book of Acts, Paul quotes Jesus, “‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

As you are planning your holiday activities, consider how you can be a blessing to others. Maybe it’s a visit with a lonely neighbor, an evening of free babysitting for a young couple who needs a few hours alone, or perhaps it’s grocery shopping for those who are hungry.

We would also ask you to consider using the list below to purchase grocery items for a neighbor in need so they can enjoy a special meal this Christmas, too. If you have young children, let them help you shop for these items and instill a spirit of compassion and philanthropy. Click here to download a print version of the shopping list.

Drop off your donations in specially-marked barrels at Altoona and Pleasant Hill Fareway or Hy-Vee stores. You can also bring them to our pantry (201 9th St NE, Altoona) between 9:00 am - 1:00 pm Monday through Friday.

God set the ultimate example of generosity when He gave His Son as a sacrifice for our sins. (John 3:16) Let’s strive to be like Him as we celebrate His birth this December.
