Covid-19 Response

Updated 4-26-2021

WALK IN SHOPPING Coming soon to the Altoona Caring Hands Pantry. Starting June 1st, 2021 masked individuals, one per household, may come in and choose their own food. If you are not ready yet to wear a mask or to come inside where other people are, we will continue our process of using menus and pagers to fill your orders for you while you remain safely in your car.

Caring Hands Outreach Center is working hard to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and is taking seriously the recommendations by Governor Reynolds, the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).  We also know that our food pantry is an important resource in our community.  With all of that in mind, we are making the following adjustments to our operations:

  • Our Clothes Hanger service remains suspended and Caring Hands  will  not accept clothing donations until further notice. You may continue to donate clothing directly to Goodwill, DAV and Encore.

  • At the Altoona location, the waiting room will be open for one client representative of each household to enter at a time. We ask that you wear a mask if you are able. Food options are presented and the collection of information be completed in a new plexiglass protected area. The client will return to their vehicle and your food choices will be delivered. We ask that they unload their own cart and return it to the pantry door when complete. These procedures will be in place for both Food Pantry and Our Daily Bread.

  • At the Eastview location, clients are still being met at their vehicles, orders taken, and food delivered back to their vehicle.
